Dear Colleagues and Research Scholars,
It gives us great pleasure in informing you that Dr C. Rammanohar Reddy, Former editor of
the Economic and Political Weekly has been appointed as the Shri D B Bandodkar Chair in
Political Economy under the Visiting Research Professor’s Programme at Goa University.
He will initiate his Chair activities in mid-December and lead a Research Scholar’s workshop
for PhD students of Social Sciences from 15 th -17 th December, 2017. The workshop will be
conducted by Dr Reddy alongwith Dr Aniket Alam, former Executive Editor of EPW and
currently an Associate Professor at IIIT Hyderabad.
This workshop aims to develop research writing skills in communicating research in
scientific journals. The workshop invites applications from registered PhD research scholars
in social sciences of Goa University. There are a limited number of seats available. Interested applicants may send an application letter indicating their GU PhD registration number along with a copy of their research proposal as approved by the FRC/DRC and a short CV to Mr Nandesh Naik (email: [email protected]) with a copy to Pranab Mukhopadhyay ([email protected]) and your PhD Guide.
While there are no fees for attending the workshop for GU students, applicants must deposit a crossed cheque in the name of the “Registrar, Goa University” of Rs 1000 (Rupees One thousand only) to the VRPP office failing which their application will not be treated as valid. This would be returned to all applicants when they attend the full workshop. However, if they fail to attend the workshop on all 3 days the application fee would be forfeited by them. Refreshments and working lunch will be provided by the organizers. A certificate will be awarded to all the participants who successfully complete the workshop.
Please note that we have limited seats in order to facilitate useful interaction. Last date to
apply is 6th December, 2017. Selected candidates will be intimated by 8th December, 2017.
Preference will be given to scholars who are nearing the completion of their PhD programme. In case any vacant seats are available, this would be offered to scholars who have just completed their PhDs from Social Sciences in the last two years. The selected participants will be informed by email with further instructions regarding venue and reading material.

Reading and Writing Workshop
Objective:
This three-day workshop is aimed at helping researchers to write a research paper (book or PhD). It will take participants through the different elements of research writing and discuss what goes into the writing of a paper. It will also discuss the publication process and how writers should prepare a paper for submission. The workshop will have a mixture of lectures and practise sessions.
Applicants:
The workshop is open to registered PhD research scholars in social sciences of Goa University. There are a limited number of seats available. Day 1: (15th December, 2017)

Morning:
After a brief introduction to the three-day workshop, the first session will see a presentation of what constitutes a research paper and how one can go about writing it. There will be a discussion as well of the different kinds of writing (article, book, etc)

Research writing: Structure and practice
Afternoon:
Session 1 (90 minutes)
(i) Importance of reading
(ii) Literature Survey
This session will discuss what goes into a literature survey and how to write one.
Session 2 (90 minutes)
Presentation of Data
A discussion, with illustrations, of how to present primary and secondary data; the typical mistakes made and when to use text/tables/graphs.
Day 2. (16th December, 2017)

Session 1 (90 minutes):
References/Citation
Presentation on the importance of referencing, the different types of citation and common mistakes. With illustrations
Session 2 (90 minutes)
Plagiarism
A presentation on what constitutes plagiarism, the different kinds of plagiarism and how to avoid it, with illustrations.
Afternoon
In the two practice sessions, material will be distributed with exercises/illustrations on how to avoid plagiarism, how to present data and prepare a bibliography. The exercises will be followed by a discussion with participants.

A presentation on how to select a journal/publisher and draw up a publication plan prior to paper submission

(i) Writing of Abstract, keywords (and also Introduction, Conclusion)

(i) Importance of Revisions
(ii) Dealing with Journals/Publishers
This session will see a discussion of the importance of revising manuscripts and how to go about it; it will also discuss the rules and protocols of dealing with journals/publishers
Session 2 (60 minutes)

Approach
- Presentations will be with Powerpoints and lectures
- Resource material where applicable will be distributed
- Practise sessions will be a mixture of reading and writing assignments
- The workshop will focus on research writing, it will not cover research methodology
