    ONB: 117: Course Title: Visual narrative as a tool for research and documentation – part 1Course Instructor: Orijit Sen, Graphic Designer, Mario Miranda Visiting Research Professor at Goa University

    Number of Credits: Two (30 hours) for students who can earn credits and participation certificates to all others

    Duration: March 4th to March 15th  2.00 pm to 5.00 pm

    Venue: Shree Mallikarjun College of Arts and Commerce, Canacona. 

    Course Outline:These courses will involve classroom lectures and discussions combined with field visits. Participants will be given classroom inputs on constructing simple visual narratives using text, drawings and photography, and then taken to a living community site in order to collect and record visual narratives. The idea will be to engage in documenting local histories. Each participating student will take up an individual aspect or strand of the project, and complete it within the duration of the course.Objectives:

    ·         Involving communities in telling and collaborating in recording their oral histories, food, arts and material culture.

    ·         To develop an understanding of visual modes of social research and documentation.

    Who can register: Students of Goa University as well as interested members of the public.

    Participation Pre-requisites: A strong interest in visual arts as well as humanities. Interest in conducting fieldwork and research outside the classroom.

    Schedule

    Week 1
    Tuesday: Participants gather for an illustrated talk on visual research techniques followed by quick drawing exercises.
    Wednesday: Group visit to site(s) and preliminary investigation.
    Thursday: Presentation of previous days research by participants to the entire group, followed by discussions. Participants finalise their individual projects.
    Friday: Group visits to site
    Saturday: Presentation of previous days research by participants to the entire group, followed by discussion.
    Week 1
    Monday: Participants begin to create their individual stories
    Tuesday: Participants continue with their stories
    Wednesday: Participants continue with their stories
    Thursday: Site visit to share the work with the community and receive feedback
    Friday: Finalisation of storiesAssessment: Participants will be assessed on the basis of

    • Quality and quantity of visual research output in the form of drawings, photographs, videos, notes, artifacts etc: 80%
    • Level of participation and enthusiasm in group discussions and presentations: 20%

    Maximum Number  of Participants: 15 which may be increased at the discretion of the course instructor.

    Note:

    A consultant graphic novelist or writer/ artist may be invited to join discussions or assist the instructor in conducting specific sessions (upto 24 hours) to provide special inputs and expertise.
