PANAJI: Following the successful launch of the visiting research professor programme (VRPP) during the last academic year, where in a total of 776 participants attended over a dozen educative sessions, Goa University (GU) has already set its goals for the new academic year with new courses and sessions.

“It is a great opportunity for students as well as other enthusiasts to gather whatever experience they can from these experts. Last year, we had an encouraging response from the participants and we hope this year we can attract a bigger audience,” said GU vice-chancellor Satish Shetye, as he addressed a press conference at the university’s council hall on Wednesday.

Maria Aurora Couto, who manages the VRPP programme, pointed out that the visiting faculty, most of whom have visited Goa often and are popular among academic circles, were disappointed that they did not see familiar faces in the audience. Couto requested the media to help spread the awareness of these sessions conducted by nationally renowned scholars and artistes so that those interested may not miss an opportunity to gain some knowledge free- of-charge.
Shetye also revealed plans for a separate chair in Marathi literature. “We have also made a conscious decision to shift the venues of some of these sessions outside GU’s campus to facilitate greater participation and easier access to these places,” Shetye added.

Around 12 different courses are displayed in the tentative schedule for 2014-15. Lovers of Western music will be able to enjoy sessions conducted by Prof Santiago Girelli and Mark Troop under the Anthony Gonsalves chair of Western music. There are also sessions by Shubha Mudgal and Ustad Bahauddin Dagar for those interested in Indian classical music.

Those who like art history will be treated to a unique experience of understanding our glorious past in an animated session by Prof Vidya Dehejia from Columbia University, USA. Online registrations links with course details will be available on www.unigoa.ac.in/vrpp.
